Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a model of how cognitive and behavioral crafting practices relate, reconciling the two dominant and conflicting job crafting theoretical perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

Starting by examining the role of cognition and cognitive practices in job crafting, this paper reconstitutes the theorizing path that led to the exclusion of cognitive crafting from job crafting theory, explores existing theorizing efforts to (re)integrate cognitive crafting back into job crafting and proposes a new job crafting model (re)integrating behavioral and cognitive practices.

Findings

By conceiving cognitive crafting practices as a sensemaking layer that spans across and reciprocates with all behavioral crafting practices, the proposed model specifies the role of behavior and cognition (and the mutual relations between them) in job crafting, while resuming its meaning-making orientation.

Originality/value

This paper offers novel insights on underspecified aspects of the job crafting theory, improving its heuristic value. It clarifies how meaning is assembled and enacted by people in work environments, allowing for more integrated and comprehensive explanations about how people relate to work.

Abstract

Purpose

Forecasts of commodity prices are vital issues to market participants and policy makers. Those of corn are of no exception, considering its strategic importance. In the present study, the authors assess the forecast problem for the weekly wholesale price index of yellow corn in China during January 1, 2010–January 10, 2020 period.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employ the nonlinear auto-regressive neural network as the forecast tool and evaluate forecast performance of different model settings over algorithms, delays, hidden neurons and data splitting ratios in arriving at the final model.

Findings

The final model is relatively simple and leads to accurate and stable results. Particularly, it generates relative root mean square errors of 1.05%, 1.08% and 1.03% for training, validation and testing, respectively.

Originality/value

Through the analysis, the study shows usefulness of the neural network technique for commodity price forecasts. The results might serve as technical forecasts on a standalone basis or be combined with other fundamental forecasts for perspectives of price trends and corresponding policy analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore how a visual perspective can be applied to strategic communication research. First, the term visual communication will be examined from various perspectives with an attempt to develop a foundation for this new academic territory. Second, this study summarises how visual approaches are applied in strategic communication research during 2005-2015, this is done by a literature review including an overall content analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to explore how visual approaches can be applied to strategic communication research, the study started with a literature review by examining the term visual communication from various perspectives. The second step was to do a brief content analysis in order to provide a detailed pattern of theoretical visual approaches in strategic communication research published in scientific journals in the field of strategic communication 2005-2015. A qualitative coding scheme was developed based on the classification of visual approaches in communication research by Barnhurst et al. (2004) and Martin (2011).

Findings

The findings of this study not only support previous research indicating that visual approaches in communication research are increasing; the study also points in the direction of that visual approaches in the research field of strategic communication has slightly emerged during 2005-2015.

Research limitations/implications

This study summarises how visual approaches are applied in strategic communication research during 2005-2015.

Originality/value

This study can provide important knowledge about an innovative visual perspective in strategic communication research.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study was to measure the apparent viscosity, flow behavior and density of melon juice as a function of temperature and juice concentration and to obtain simple equations to correlate experimental data.

Design/methodology/approach

Melon juice was concentrated in a rotary evaporator to 40±1, 52.5±1 and 65±1°Brix at 50°C, 80 rpm and stored at 4°C until analysis. Density of melon juice was determined with 25 ml pycnometer at 15, 25 and 35°C and was expressed as kg/m3. All experiments were conducted in triplicate. Experimental data were fitted to different models (linear, quadratic, exponential, quadratic exponential and polynomial) using Minitab 16. Significant differences in the mean values were reported at p<0.05. The flow behavior of melon juice was determined using a concentric cylinder rotational viscometer at shear rate range of 13.2-330 s−1 and temperatures of 15, 25 and 35°C. The experimental data were analyzed Slide Write V7.01 Trial Size (p<0.05) and the rheograms was plotted by Microsoft Excel 2007.

Findings

Results showed that the four-term polynomial model is the best model for computing density values from temperature and concentration (R2=0.999). The measured shear stress was within 1.69-780 Pa, corresponding to viscosity range of 0.016-0.237 Pa · s. Within the tested conditions, the concentrate exhibited a pseudo plastic behavior. Temperature had an inverse effect on shear stress and apparent viscosity.

Originality/value

No research had been done on production of melon juice concentrate.

Abstract

Purpose

In 2022, the International Network for Quality Assurance (QA) Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) published the new guidelines by adding three QA modules in response to the changing higher education landscape. The paper aims to investigate the transformative focus of quality assurance in higher education globally as well as Asian response to three new QA modules according to the INQAAHE ISGs.

Design/methodology/approach

The research conducted a quantitative approach for data collection. An on-line survey was conducted to perceive QA practices, perceptions toward new emerging QA modules and challenges encountered. In total, there were 26 responses from 18 territories with 22 QA agencies. A total of 13 out of them have a national qualifications framework in place.

Findings

Three are three major findings in the study. First, national policy and criteria and standards in distance education have been developed in the majority of Asian nations. Second, non-signatories of the Tokyo Convention had a higher proportion of having related policies, regulations and criteria in CBHE and distance education. Third, national policies and regulations; and lack of professional staff are two common challenges implementing QA in new types of providers.

Originality/value

The findings are of value for policymakers, QA agencies and universities to advocate the new QA model as a systematic approach in response to changing higher education landscape in the post pandemic era.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aim to propose a methodological mapping approach for the evaluation of dissertations and theses of graduate programs in the area of environmental sciences in Brazil in relation to the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Design/methodology/approach

The research is characterized as exploratory with qualitative/quantitative approach. The proposed model was developed as a computational algorithm with a pilot being adopted as a professional master in national network for teaching in environmental sciences (ProfCiAmb) comprising associated courses from nine Brazilian public universities. 230 dissertations completed between 2018 and 2020 were analyzed.

Findings

A total of 266 correlations were identified between the texts and descriptors of each SDG. Correlation values between 0.100 (minimum value – Vmin) and 0.464 (maximum value – Vmax) were observed. SDG 4 – Quality Education (Vmax = 0.399) and SDG 6 – Drinking Water and Sanitation (Vmax = 0.464) were those with the highest correlation values, followed by SDG 3 – Health and Well-Being (Vmax = 0.299) and SDG 17 – Partnerships and Means of Implementation (Vmax = 0.249).

Practical implications

The construction of the computational algorithm provided consistent quantitative analyses with potential to contribute to the improvement of the multidimensional evaluation of graduate studies, as well as to support public policies related to teaching and research and strategic planning of the programs.

Originality/value

The relevance of this study lies in the creation of a model that involves the creation of metrics and tools regarding the impact of graduate studies on society.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the more accurate estimation of aero-heating for the ablative 3-D noses by using the viscous shock layers and similarity of viscous boundary layer methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The combination of viscous shock layer, similarity of viscous boundary layer (SVBL) methods, Park ablation and Baldwin–Lomax turbulent models is presented in this paper. The proposed method reduces computational memory and run time as compared to the time marching algorithms during flight trajectory. Therefore, the space marching algorithm and finite difference method is used, and the governing equations are transferred into curvature coordinate by using the mapping terms.

Findings

The solving for an ogive nose during flight trajectory shows that the convergence of this technique is fast as compared to the user defined function based on the fluent solvers, program to axisymmetric regular geometry code and other research. The results of this research are validated by the mentioned research studies. The relative error for the aero-heating, species concentration of the shock layer gas mixture because of dissociation/ionization of air and surface ablation results is less than 6, 5 and 11 per cent, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

The required time for an aerodynamic design of hypersonic noses reduces as the induced aero-heating is one of the principal design parameters in standpoint aerodynamic, structural and other terms. The magnitude of this parameter, surface temperature and surface recess because of ablation should be corrected during flight trajectory.

Social implications

The results of this research are applicable for aerospace industries.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management (IJPPM) is one of the prominent journals publishing on general management with a particular focus on performance management and productive sciences. The objective of this study is to provide an academic structure overview of the journal between 2004 and 2018 using bibliometric tools.

Design/methodology/approach

Data used for this study were extracted using the Scopus database. Bibliometric analysis using several bibliometric indicators are adopted to know the major trends and themes of the journal. Mapping of bibliographic data is carried using VOSviewer and Gephi software.

Findings

Authors: Most of the IJPPM contributors are affiliated to the UK and India. Journal Performance: It is gaining pre-eminence in terms of total citations as well as CiteScores. Main themes: Major themes published in the journal are “performance management”, “productivity”, “six sigma”, “lean” and “supply chain management”.

Originality/value

IJPPM's growing influence in the scientific community has generated the interest to analyse the journal's publication and growth pattern. Moreover, no such retrospective bibliometric study for IJPPM is conducted so far.
